Nicolet
Represented at the American Camp Association National Conference |
| The
"Windy City" of Chicago, Illinois was the 2006 site
of the annual American Camp Association National Conference
from February 7th - 10th. The theme "Partnering With Parents"
was well received by almost 2,000 camping professionals from
across the nation and internationally. Numerous seminars and
educational sessions presented valuable opportunities to further
communication and learn more methods of networking with camp
families. In addition to camp owners and directors, many students
interested in pursuing camping as a career were also in attendance,
and among them was none other than Nicolet's own Katy Eagen.
Katy is a Junior at Hope College in Michigan and will be assuming
the role of Assistant Program Director at camp this summer.
Nicolet alumna, CN Advisory Board member, and ACA National staff
member, Cathy Scheder, was super busy with her many responsibilities
during the conference. Georgi Starz, Nicolet's owner and director,
was one of four delegates representing Wisconsin during the
national governance hearings to finalize the new accreditation
standards and develop position statements pertaining to criminal
background checks for staff and volunteers and also the use
of public lands by camps and youth development groups. |

Ann Sheets, from Texas. |

international staff placement in the USA and abroad. Congratulations,
Cathy! |

2006
Camp Fairs

Kay
Korach Babcock, Georgi Starz, and Yael Babcock Stein were
present at the Milwaukee Camp Fair held at Brookfield Court
in Brookfield, WI. Sponsored by Milwaukee Metroparent Magazine
and the Wisconsin Section of the American Camp Association,
the fair was one of five attended by Nicolet this winter.
Thanks to Rand and Jan Goldberg Goldstein for singing camp's
praises at the St. Louis Summer Opportunities Fair and to
AJ and Judy Loewenstein Roberts for being "Nicolet salesladies"
at the Detroit fair. We greatly appreciate our alumni involvement
and their continuing support of camp in many different ways.

Athletes on the Sports Page |

"3,
2, 1...go when ready!"

Halle's
parents and sister, Bailey, are her greatest fans! When not
skiing and riding on the winter snow, the girls are avid fans
of skiing and riding on the calm water of Franklin Lake during
their summers at camp. |

Pushing
hard for the first gate.

Headed
for the finish.
Almost
more exciting than viewing the Olympics in Torino, Italy was
having a chance to watch 10 year old Halle Nissen compete
in her 4th USSA alpine ski race this season at Brule Mountain,
Michigan. Racing in the J5 Girls Division, Halle runs gates
in the slalom and giant slalom events in a three state area.
Halle will be returning for her 3rd summer and Bailey for
her 5th year at Camp Nicolet. |
The
Great Nordic Ski Racing Challenge |

#145
Crystal Ward at the Boulder Mountain Tour.
Another
scene from the winter Olympics? Nevertheless, the passion
lives in the hearts of the hundreds of nordic racers that
competed in the Boulder Mountain Tour in Sun Valley, Idaho
the first weekend in February. 2005 staff member, Crystal
Ward, won her age division (18-24) and was the 25th fastest
woman overall.
A
member of the Junior Olympic Nordic Team throughout her high
school years, Crystal went on to race Division 1 for Colby
College in Maine. This winter Crystal accepted the position
of |
|

Assistant
Nordic Coach for the Park City, Utah Club Team and has been
instructing at a Park City touring center.
Getting
the racing fever once again, Crystal has competed in two western
events this season and has placed first in her division in
both races. Congrats, Crys!

Buckeyes Receive Varsity Honors |

Pat
Collins Meves, Georgi Starz, and C. Jayne Weber Melia (missing
from photo was Deb Crist) were on hand to receive their Varsity
O awards. Go Bucks!
Several
women who are alumnae of the Ohio State University and also
happen to be alumnae of Camp Nicolet, were invited back to
Columbus, Ohio on January 29th to receive their retroactive
varsity letters. As collegiate athletes |
|
prior
to Title IX (before women were eligible for varsity
sport status), these gals represented the university on various
athletic teams. Just as many other colleges and universities
across the nation have done, Ohio State is now bestowing retroactive
varsity honors.
A
reception followed by an OSU vs. Illinois women's basketball
game was highlighted by a center court halftime presentation
during which these women were recognized in front of 11,000
Buckeye fans. An awesome moment!
Congratulations
to Pat Collins Meves (golf), C.Jayne Weber Melia (softball,
basketball, volleyball), Deb Crist, and Georgianna Schrader
Starz (alpine skiing). At the time, they all did it for "the
love of the game"! |

| March
called for a mid-winter mini staff reunion at Big Sky, Montana.
Enjoying the good spring snow, beautiful mountains, and sunshine
were host Dan Jahnke, Gabriel Brockman, Jeremy Starz, Chris
Starz, and Alison Adams. |
