Despite a few raindrops here and there, the sun continues to shine
at Camp Nicolet! Welcome to this edition of "News from Franklin

have lots of wonderful things which they would like to share. In
this edition we'll tell you about the 2002 Wisconsin State Waterski

some of our campers and staff participated. You'll hear a first-hand account
of the Second Session Talent Show, about the Sylvania I and II trips, and
our "wildlife" correspondent is back with another Northwoods animal update.
Wow! Above is a picture of some of the Porcupine Mountains Trippers, as
shown at the Lake of the Clouds trailhead. These trippers embarked on a
three-day, two-night trip which began at the Lake of the Clouds, took them
into the Porcupine Mountains Backcountry to Mirror Lake, westbound to the
Big Carp River Valley, and then eastbound back towards Lake of the Clouds.
Truly an exciting adventure! We look forward to a full report on the trip
in a later edition of "News from Franklin Lake." Again, despite some raindrops,
campers and staff alike are "gearing up" for the final week of camp and
for all the special events which will take place. It's an exciting time
to be at Camp Nicolet! Thanks for dropping by, read on, and Think Sunshine!

On Saturday, July 27th and Sunday, July 28th, campers and staff from Camp

Second Session
Talent Show
by Molly Ryder
The Second Session Talent Show at Camp Nicolet was held on Sunday,
June 28th, 2002. It was a huge success, and all of the campers had
a great time participating. The show featured impressive dances performed
by Cara and Eliza from Juniper, and Lili, Dulce, Carla, and Maria
from Cedar. Birch, Tamarack, Spruce, Pines, Balsam, and Little Fawn
did entire cabin acts while some girls in Fir performed funny N'Sync
impersonations. Another highlight of the show was Molly who represented
Juniper by singing the ballad "Drive." All in all the Second Session
Talent Show was a night filled with energy, laughs, and memories.

The Sylvania
Wilderness
Trip
by Mary Donoghue
& Sarah Hersh
Last week Juniper and Cedar went on a three-day canoe trip to the
Sylvania Wilderness in upper Michigan. The trip was really cool, and
Juniper saw a few Bald Eagles. One of the challenges was canoeing
for about two miles to and from our campsites. While Cedar was there,
they had to overcome the challenge of some rain. Despite the rain,
campers from both Juniper and Cedar bonded very well on their respective
trips. The Sylvania trip was an exciting adventure which will always
be remembered.

"Deers"
A Special Wildlife Report
by Kelsie Zaffarese
(Little Fawn)
Deers are really shy and they eat grass. And they drink water. The
color of their eyes are dark brown. When you see a deer without antlers,
that deer is called a mama deer. The color of their fur is light brown. And the mama
protects the baby. The baby is called a fawn. And when they hear danger,
they run as fast as they can. This has been a special "wildlife" report
from Kelsie Zaffarese from Little Fawn cabin. |

From The Editor:
by Jeremy Starz
The last of the lunch announcements were made in the Dining Hall. People
wearing red shirts were dismissed, followed by people wearing flip-flops.
Some campers rushed off to canteen, some to their cabins for an afternoon
nap. After everyone left the Dining Hall, I made my way to the office
to check the afternoon schedule - and it began to rain. The rain persisted
through rest hour, creating perfect snoozing weather in the northwoods.
For the campers and staff who were "stranded" in the office during the
rainstorm, it created an environment of chit-chat, laugther, and energetic
reflections on summers past. With the last week of camp only a few short
days away, Junior Counselors Caroline Spellman, Caitlin Gould, and Kate
Cochrane shared with me some of their favorite memories and lasting
impressions from summers past during the rainstorm. Caroline and Caitlin
shared that, throughout many summers at Nicolet, many activites were
mastered and many new friendships were made which certainly will last
a lifetime. Caroline and Caitlin also recalled special moments such
as dancing to the music and fireworks on Disney Day and assuming the
responsibilities of waking up early in the morning to care for the horses
- both of which are memories which will be cherished forever. Kate Cochrane's
reflections on summers past were heartwarming as well. She says there
have been many memorable experiences at camp from comedic outbursts
to beautiful sunsets. Kate says, "But the memory I will always hold
to the highest value is the memory of the friends that I made. I will
always remember and keep in touch with my friends." It's amazing how
the rainiest of afternoons can produce the sunshinest of memories. Phenomenal.
With just over a week remaining in camp, many more memories will be
made. I look forward to being stranded in the office again during a
rainstorm and hearing recollections about these wonderful times at Camp
Nicolet. Thanks for checking out this edition of "News from Franklin
Lake!"
