Challenges... Friends... Memories... New Skills... all things from Summer 2002 which won't be soon forgotten. Welcome to this edition of "News from Franklin Lake" which finds camp a whole lot quieter than it was just a week and a half ago. Temperatures are getting just a little bit cooler, the water seems to be just a little chillier, and every now and again, a person may detect just

the slightest hint of fall in the air. With summer weather just beginning to slip away, with camp just a little quieter, and with preparations being made everywhere for the beginning of a new school year, the challenges we faced, the friends we made, the memories we shared, and the new skills we learned serve, for campers and staff alike, as a reminder of what a truly wonderful summer it was. All of these are also wonderful things on which to reflect as we head into the winter months, and, as said in previous editions, may bring some warmth to the chilliest of winter days. Over the past week, we have been busy compiling pictures from Final Banquet, and more. It's so wonderful to look back and see the smiles on the faces of so many. This is heartwarming, too. So, read on, check out the pictures, read some wonderful "end of the summer" thoughts from campers, and thanks for checking out this edition of "News from Franklin Lake!"

Sunday, August 25th: Nicolet Family Campers Depart

"Heart Friends"
by Emmy Grace

This is a special article about Heart Friends. What is a Heart Friend? Heart Friends are similar to White Elephant. They are really fun because they are a mystery person from whom you get special notes and presents to brighten your day. The Heart Friends party always takes place near the end of the session. Heart Friends is neat because it's a great way to get to know some of the other campers. During the Heart Friends party we give our gifts and nice notes to the person who was our Heart Friend. Last year we all sat in a big circle and one person started the gift exchange process. That person went to their Heart Friend and gave them their final gift. Then that person went to their Heart Friend and gave them their gift, and the process continued that way. It's a neat way to find out who your Heart Friend is. Heart Friends are really cool and really fun.

Spirit
of Nicolet:
Different
for Everyone

by Becca Dray

As my third year of spending my summers at Nicolet is coming to a close, I can't help but remember all the memories and friends I have made. Learning about things such as "Living Together" or just important life lessons I'll never forget will help me along the road of life. The Spirit of Nicolet is different for everyone, but surely it is filled with love, tears, and laughter, of every single hour, minute, or second spent here in this very spot. This experience that is camp will last each and every one of us a lifetime.

Spirit
of Nicolet:
Seen in
many ways

by Julie Daniel

The Spirit of Nicolet is shown in a wide variety of ways at this outstanding camp. For instance, you can't help but notice the Spirit of Nicolet at each campfire. The smiling faces of every camper as they put their arms around another person's shoulders allows anyone to think Camp Nicolet is a wonderful place to be. The Spirit of Nicolet is also shown during the Horse and Ski Shows. All of the girls in the audience cheer on their friends no matter how their performance was. These actions truly show Camp Nicolet just can't be beat. Even during the competition of Marathon Day the Spirit of Nicolet shines. Just a few days ago, during campfire, I wasn't feeling well at all. I had a pounding headache and a vigorous stomach ache. But as campfire progressed, everyone seemed united with their arms linked together and with smiles on their faces. At the end of campfire, I, too, had a huge grin on my face because I felt a sense of community. In the future, I hope Camp Nicolet's overflowing amount of spirit will continue so other children who experience this camp will gain, as I have, leadership skills, independence, and responsibility, as well as strong friendships and patience.
From The Editor:
by Jeremy Starz

It always brings me great joy to read the wonderful articles submitted by our awesome campers. Final Banquet and the last week of camp is always a time in which memories are made. The pictures of campers and staff from Final Banquet fit so nicely with the articles in this edition, in that they all truly illustrate, with every single snapshot, the Spirit of Nicolet. Smiling faces, friends, memories; again, none of which will be soon forgotten. Speaking of snapshots, in sorting through some old pictures around camp, I found one - the writing on the back of which - I shared with campers and staff at Final Banquet. The snapshot must have been taken in 1945 or 1946, and it was of my grandparents, Ann and Wendall Schrader, standing in front of the original Camp Nicolet roadsign. It must have been sent to them by one of their friends, as the writing on the back said: "This one is my favorites, because I know both of you are very proud..." I shared that Mr. and Mrs. Schrader were very proud of their camp, campers, and staff then, just as they would be very, very proud of their camp, campers, and staff today. Not only are they proud, but we, too, are very proud of our campers who complete the Isle Royale, who get up on one ski, or who participate in our first ever invitational soccer tournament. We're equally proud of our staff, who, through their skills, talents, personalities, and special gifts, make camp the wonderful place it is for campers. We are so proud of our 2002 staff who worked so hard in many ways; and we are so proud of our 2002 campers who grew so much in many ways. Ann and Wendall Schrader would be very proud, and so are we. We would like to thank everyone, campers, staff, parents, alums, for such a wonderful summer. It was nice to share those thoughts at Final Banquet. Some other notes, now, regarding "News from Franklin Lake;" this is the last "regular" summer edition, but through the fall, be sure to check back for updates with news and pictures from around camp. We are excited as we begin many projects to make things at camp even better for next summer! Again, check back often for the latest news and see what camp looks like in the fall and winter! Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful beginning to the school year, and, as always, Think Sunshine!
