Building Tradition:
Isle Royale 2002

by Jeremy Starz

A beautiful summer morning - the sun shining across crystal clear waters, a warm wind blowing through the tall northern pines, the smell of campfire smoke, and the promise of a hearty breakfast in preparation for meeting the day's adventures. Perhaps the description of the beginning of a day on any camping trip - but add to this tranquil mix the feeling of belonging to something special; friendship, challenge, achievement, and the feeling of belonging to a long-standing tradition. It was many years before I was born that my grandfather, Wendall Schrader, led a select group of girls on a trip to the boundary waters of Canada. The previous description could have been of any morning on that special trip. 2002 marks the beginning of a new tradition at Camp Nicolet. On Thursday, July 11th, Nancy Anderson, Lisa Goldstein, Becky Price, AJ Roberts, Kate Brockman, Rachel Stern, Alison Schmidt, Chris Starz, Hailey Cox, and myself will establish a new chapter in Nicolet history, as we will make our departure for Isle Royale National Park for a 6 day/6 night 28 mile backpacking trip. Not since the Canadian Honors Trip has such a camping/tripping endeavor been embarked upon at Camp Nicolet. Everyone involved has been making great preparations for the trip, from planning menus, to packing medical kits, to assembling stoves, to pitching tents. This trip stands as a culmination of skills learned from all tripping experiences at camp. The trip begins with an overnight stay in Houghton, MI, followed by a 6 hour boat trip out to the island. Once on the island, there will be an orientation with the park ranger, and then the 5-day hiking portion of the trip includes overnight stays at Three Mile, Daisy Farm, and Lake Richie. Trippers will experience a hike to the summit of Greenstone Ridge, which include breathtaking views from Mount Franklin and Mount Ojibway. Also, views of Lake Superior will be abundant, as the majority of the trail follows the lake shore. The possibility also exists for hikers to view wildlife, with the major species including moose and wolves. But more memorable than the views and the wildlife is the feeling of being part of this new tradition - this new chapter in history - at Camp Nicolet; a tradition of friendship, challenge, and achievement. Everyone is prepared and excited to embark on this endeavor on Thursday morning. Be sure to check back later next week for pictures, impressions, and stories from the 2002 Nicolet Isle Royale hikers, who, by participating in this special trip, are ultimately building new traditions at camp.

Dinnertime on Tuesday, July 9th was special at Camp Nicolet. At lunch, cabins received invitations to come to "Academy Awards Night" in the Dining Hall. Everyone arrived dressed as their favorite celebrity, and each cabin performed a scene from their favorite movie. Little Fawn "took home" honors for best skit, performing a final scene from the movie "Shrek." Above are some happy campers dressed as their favorite celebrities. Can you guess as whom they came dressed??

Thank you again for logging on to campnicolet.com and checking out this edition of "News From Franklin Lake." Many parents, alumni, and friends of camp have contacted us and let us know they enjoy the updates and the pictures of camp in action. The following was received from a Nicolet Alumnus, and should bring back some memories: "Thanks for giving the parents a glimpse of camp life. I have a bag full of old Nicoletters from 1967-1975 (and calendars, too). The earlier editions were on stapled yellow mimeographed sheets. In the summer, campers and staff would contribute articles just as you are doing now. Of course, as technology improved (and Georgi became involved) the large white folded newspaper format replaced the previous method and photographs were included, too... Who would have thought that one day we'd be receiving color pictures and text on a screen in our homes? Wow!" Agreed, it is hard to believe how much technology has developed in just a few short years. "News From Franklin Lake" is usually updated twice per week. However, since I will be away from camp on the Isle Royale trip, it will be a more than a full week before the next edition is published. In that edition, expect updates and pictures from the Isle, pictures from the beginning of 2nd session, and more! Until then, thank you for reading, and Think Sunshine!
