"Loads of Magical Fun!!!"
Harry Potter Day 2002
by Talia Cohen

Harry Potter Day was loads of magical fun! There were three teams - Ravenclaw, Griffendor, and Hufflepuff - into which campers and staff split. For dinner the night before, campers and staff dressed up as their favorite Harry Potter characters. Everyone arrived at the Dining Hall looking awesome - and suprised! The Dining Hall was decorated with streamers, floating lights, creative posters, and more! Everyone was called up to a chair to be sorted by the sorting hat, which told you what group you were in. The next day, the magic began with getting together with the group you were in and making up a song and cheer. Then, you performed both the song and cheer and it was judged by some of the staff. After that, we played very fun relay races! For one of the games, you would go across the field running on a broomstick. The second game was the good ol' three legged race. We then played a game where you twirl around five times holding a broomstick, run across the field, and run back. Last but not least, we played a very intense-but-fun game of Quiditch (which is a game in the books and the movie). Quiditch declared which team won. In third place was Griffendor, in second was Ravenclaw, and that leaves Hufflepuff in first! It was a very fun day, and a big congratulations goes to all who participated!

Quiditch

As Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Griffendor gathered around the soccer field, we all began to wonder how the imaginary Harry Potter game of Quiddich was going to be played. In the book, a bunch of wizards and witches flew around on broomsticks hitting and catching flying balls going extremely fast. So how would we be able to do this with regular humans and balls??? Well, camp staff did a wonderdful job, creating a game which was a cross between dodgeball, basketball, and capture the flag. On either end of the field there were two hoops through which the "quaffle" was meant to be thrown. Team mates would run across the field with the quaffle, passing to each other along the way. If they were hit with a "bludger," they would be out of the game and another teammate would be in. While this was happening, two people would be looking for the "snitch" (worth fifty points per game). There was a "seeker" which consisted of a camper and a staff member and they had to find a piece of paper that was the same color as their team. If you threw the quaffle through the two hoops at your end of the field, then your team received ten points. Each Quiditch match was 20 minutes long, and we played four different matches. In the end, victory went to Hufflepuff. All in all, though, we believe that everyone would agree all teams had an awesome time. It was very interesting how the staff members organized the rules, and we think we should have Quiditch as an elective because it was so awesome! Overall, the Camp Nicolet version of Quiditch was a fun game into which everyone was able to get involved.

The Kawaga Invitational
Water Ski Tournament

by Jeremy Starz

On Tuesday, July 23rd Nicolet skiers AJ Roberts, Becky Price, Madeline Holtzman, Jennifer Loewenstein, Courtney Wood, and Meredith Bartelstein ventured to Camp Kawaga in Minocqua, WI for the annual Kawaga Ski Tournament. Many camps from around the area attended the tournament, including Red Arrow Camp, Camp Birch Trail, Chippewa Ranch Camp, and Camp Agawak. Nicolet skiers participated in Trick and Slalom competitions against skiers from Birch Trail, Chippewa, and Agawak. In the Trick events, AJ Roberts earned a 10th place rating with 190 total points, and Becky Price earned an 8th place ranking with 220 total points. In the Slalom events, AJ Roberts earned a 9th place rating with 3.5 bouys at 26 MPH, Jennifer Loewenstein secured 7th place with 3 bouys at 28 MPH and 3 previous clears, and Madeline Holtzman receievd 3rd place honors, completing 6 bouys at 28 MPH. It is impressive to note Holtzman, a camper in Spruce cabin, is the youngest person ever to complete a regulation slalom course at the Kawaga Tournament! A big congratulations goes to Madeline, and to all who skiied in the Kawaga tournament. The Nicolet Ski Team placed second overall, with Camp Birch Trail taking home first place honors. Congratulations to our ski team on a job well done. Ski Director Chris Starz and instructor Kelly Eagen represented Nicolet as staff at the tournament.
"Cook-ins!"
by Amy Reed

Last Wednesday it was raining outside, so we couldn't have our normal Wednesday dinners at campsites not so far away from Nicolet. Instead, we had cook-ins! A cook-in is when you get to have dinner in your cabin. We lit a fire in our fireplaces and cooked our tinfoil dinners. Tinfoil dinners are when you take all sorts of food like hamburger, cheese, potatos, and others from which to choose, and you wrap it all in tinfoil and cook it in the fire! Once they are cooked, you unwrap them and they are ready to eat! In the end, they all taste delicious! I don't know a person who doesn't love them. After dinner, we made S'Mores. They were soooo good! Finally, after we cleaned up from dinner and cleaned up our cabin, we played games and went to bed. Cook-ins are loads of fun!!!

Water Skiing!
by Carla Trujillo
& Mariel Krasovsky

Water skiing is fun. For some people it is very hard, but for others it is very easy. First you have to make sure you put on a life jacket. Second, you have to get your skis wet and then put them on. They have to be in front of you. Then, you get into the water and grab the rope. Once you have the rope and you are all ready, you say "Hit it!" to start the fun part. But before all of that you have to make sure you have your knees bent and your arms straight. Then you say "Hit it!" and the fun part begins! Yay! We like water skiing so much because it feels like you are flying over the water and you have so much fun while doing it. It also feels very cool when you cross your wakes and you feel like you are flying in the air! It is very fun!

Chipmunks
by Kelsie Zaffarese (Little Fawn cabin)

Chipmunks eat acorns. And they are really shy. When their ears are up, that means danger is coming after it. Their colors are brown with black stripes. The color of their eyes is dark brown. I really like them because they are cute. They live in Wisconsin, and they hide so no one can find them. This has been a special report on the "wildlife" at Nicolet by Kelsie Zaffarese from Little Fawn cabin.

Lots of Chipmunks keep us
company everyday at Nicolet!

"Flashbacks...!!!"
by Newsletter Staff

One sunshiny afternoon at Camp Nicolet we had some time to dig back through some pictures we found in the camp office, and, wouldn't you know it? We found these! Here is a little trivia challenge: do you know any of these people caught on camera? We'll give you a hint by revealing the decades below! Have fun, and good luck!

1970's - - - - - - and - - - - - - 1990's

From The Editor:
by Jeremy Starz

We sure hope you enjoyed the many articles and pictures submitted by our talented newsletter correspondents this week. I always look forward to reading through the articles after I get them from the Newsletter elective which takes place on Monday evenings. Moreover, I look forward to reading the articles as it provides a glimpse of camp from the viewpoint of our campers. It's really rewarding to share campers' positive comments, fun stories, and entertaining accounts of events with staff who pass through the office as future editions of the newsletter are in preparation to be published. These great articles not only provide a firsthand account of events at camp as experienced by campers, they also serve as a compliment of sorts - a positive reinforcement, if you will - to our staff, letting them know their talents and energetic personalities are truly being noticed and appreciated by our great campers. Thus, it is truly rewarding and uplifting to read the newsletter articles on Tuesday mornings, and we continue to thank our campers and staff for their contributions to such a positive camp environment. In the next edition of "News from Franklin Lake" we'll hear about the Sylvania Trip, the Wisconsin State Water Ski Tournament (in which some of our campers and staff will be participating), and perhaps a full report on Disney Day! On that note, we'll M-I-Cee ya later-K-E-Y... (I'm looking forward to Disney Day already...) and thanks for reading this edition of "News from Franklin Lake!"
