"Staff of the Future!"
an interview with Nicolet Counselors in Training
by Jessica Gelman & Charlotte Harris
Many campers come back to camp year after year after year. But people sometimes ask, "what happens
when you're a little too old to be a camper?!?" Well, a very important part of the staff at Nicolet
include the C.I.T.s, or the Counselors In Training. Newsletter correspondents Jessica Gelman and Charlotte Harris
decided to find out just what it's like to be a C.I.T. at Nicolet and interviewed 2002 C.I.T.s Alison Schmidt and Meredith Bartelstein.
Here's what they had to say: Newsletter: What are your responsibilities? Alison: "I have a cabin which I am responsible to
help with. I help out the counselors, go on cookouts, and cover cabins. I help teach activities. It's fun, I like it." Meredith:
"I help out the cabin Fir, and assist the skiing and smallcraft areas." Newsletter: What cabins were you in when you were a camper? Alison: "Spruce,
Birch, Balsam, Pines, Tamarack, Trails End, and now I am in Lakewood." Meredith: "Spruce, Fir, Balsam, Pines, Tamarack, Trails End, and I am now in Lakewood."
Newsletter: "Do you think you will come back next year as counselors?" Alison & Meredith: "Yes, our experience as C.I.T.s has shown us a small portion
of the responsibility which lies ahead. If given the opportunity, we would be excited and willing to take on the role of a counselor next year." Newsletter: "How many
years have you been coming to camp?" Alison & Meredith: "We have enjoyed seven years at Nicolet. They were an experience of a lifetime." Newsletter: "Thank you,
Alison and Meredith!"
"A Magical Day... at Nicolet!
Disney Day 2002
photos by Jeremy Starz

The Nicolet Mouseketeers and, wow, cool clothes!

The A.C.s as the 1001 Dalmations & The C.I.T.s star as characters from The Lion King

At the A.C.'s booth you could "disguise yourself as a dalmation" & Tamarack challenged you to "dive for pearls"... cool!

Some Disney Trivia with the C.I.T.s? Or a ride on the "Monorail?" Hmmm....

Birch as the "Pirates of the Carribbean"... arrrr.... & Diving for treasure in Franklin Lake? Awesome!
For the first time in many years, Disney Day was held at Nicolet! The celebration began at lunchtime with a
special Disney meal, followed by a really cool float parade, and carnival-type activities in the afternoon. Each cabin was responsible for
creating their own special booth in which fellow campers could participate. After dinner, evening electives were held, followed by a special
Disney Day fireworks display on the beach! Wow! We are already looking forward to many more exciting Disney Days to come!
Lights... Camera... Action!
Second Session Talent Show
by Newsletter Staff
The Second Session Talent show was held on the evening of Sunday, July 28th. Lots of campers from all
cabins in camp participated in the show. Some campers from the West End emceed the show with Drama Director Kirsten McCrossen.
The show began with a spanish dancing performance, and was followed by such acts as Pines' "Singled Out," Birch's television show, Spruce's
"America's Funniest Cabin Videos," Anna Pestine on her unicycle, "A Day in the Life...," and much more. Lots of people worked really hard
to put on some very entertaining skits! Speaking of the Drama Department, you won't want to miss the Nicolet Players' presentation of
"Music Man" on Thursday of the final week of camp (Thursday, August 8th). Mark it on your calendar!
From The Editor:
by Jeremy Starz
Just a few days ago after a smallcraft class, I had the opportunity to chat with some of our campers and staff. The consensus
was the summer had flown by simply just too fast. "I can't believe it's almost over" they said. I reminded them that, at
that point, there was more than two weeks left in the summer. They breathed a collective sigh of relief, and the conversation switched
to another topic. Later, as I sat in the ski boat, I thought about our conversation, and, specifically, about the "time flying by" part.
I looked up at the blue sky, at the puffy clouds, down at the clear water, and across the lake at the green trees, and I thought to myself,
"don't worry about time slipping away too quickly, just enjoy the moment." And I think this may be something important to carry with us through the rest
of the summer, as there, in the less-than-two short weeks which remain, will be many special moments to come. Although some may think nearing the end
of camp may be a period of "winding down," really we are "gearing up" to one of the most exciting weeks of the summer. For example, the Nicolet Tennis Tournament
finals, the Staff Variety Show, the Horseshow, Candelight Vespers, the Ski Show, and final Campfire all take place during the last week of camp. It will be
during these special times and events, times through which we may remember the entire summer, that we may need to take a second and a deep breath, and step back, and
just "enjoy the moment." In the coming days there are still many exciting things to which to look forward at Camp Nicolet; and perhaps stepping back and
enjoying each moment spent here may make the summer last just a little bit longer. And on that positive note I say, thanks for dropping by and checking out
and hope you enjoyed this edition of "News from Franklin Lake!"
