July 3, 2002

It's hard to believe we're already halfway through Week 2 at Nicolet! Wow!
Everyone has been so busy, time really is flying by! In this edition of "News from Franklin Lake,"
You'll hear from more talented campers who will tell us about the annual Camp Kawaga Regatta, what it's like
to sail for the first time, horseback riding, tubing on wavy days, the First Session Talent Show, and so
much more. Also, new last week - but again featured this week - if you would like a bigger version of a picture you see
with one of the articles (or by itself), just click on it once and, poof!, there will appear a much larger
image! Pretty neat! So, please enjoy the articles and the pictures, and watch for our special Independence Day
edition of the newsletter coming at the end of the week! Think Sunshine!
Excellent Events at Nicolet:
Wednesday, July 3rd: Cookouts
Thursday, July 4th: Independence Day Celebration (Fireworks and Dance)
Saturday, July 6th: Invitational Horse Show (Afternoon) and Campfire! (PM)

The 2002 Kawaga Regatta
by Nancy Anderson
This past Monday, Camp Nicolet went to the Kawaga Regatta. It was fun, and Nicolet placed
second overall out of seven camps, beaten only by Kawaga. We still are the #1 girls camp on the water! Yeah!
Rachel Stern and Alison Schmidt placed 5th. Nancy Anderson and Becky Price placed 6th, Alicia Sanz and Anna Valeta placed 10th,
Lauren Price and Samantha Holquist placed 15th, and Lisa Goldstein and AJ Roberts placed 20th. Everyone had a great time particpating
and are proud to be, yet again, the defending girls camp champions! Great job sailors!

The Talent Show
by Laura Levine

The First Session Talent Show last night was really great. Girls danced, sang, and did skits. It was very creative.
Rhiannon Corby sang a song from a play, and it sounded great. My cabin, Balsam, dressed up as Britney Spears from her
different music videos. One girl, Anna Pestine (a.k.a. "Pesto") did a routine on her unicycle.
It was also really cool. A couple of girls from Fir sang along to a song by Michelle Branch. There was also a
Barbie doll fashion show with the girls from Juniper. Their outfits were great. All who participated in the show
did a really wonderful job and everyone had lots and lots of fun!

"My First Time Sailing"
by Maddie Nieman and Abbey Richison

There are many activities from which you can choose at Nicolet, but sailing is one of my favorites. I like it because
you can relax while having fun at the same time. You can steer, you can control the speed with the sail, but both are just as fun.
We learn so much about sailing, like the parts of the boat. They are: the boat itself, the sail, gooseneck, mainsheet, halyard, tiller, rudder,
mast, boom, and the daggerboard. The sail moves the boat, the gooseneck is where you put the mast through, the mainsheet is to bring in or let out the sail,
the tiller is a stick which moves the rudder (which steers the boat), the boom is the bottom of the sail, and the daggerboard makes the boat hard to tip over
(and it makes it harder for the wind to push you sideways). One phrase to signify turning is "Come about!" We also learn rules like "Always wear a Personal Flotation Device."
Sailing is so much fun and I always enjoy this activity!

Riding This Week
by Nicole Blackman
This was a great week in horseback riding for everyone!
Favorite horses - about which everyone says really good things - include Zar and Dwain.
One horse, named Magic, "magically" jumped over the fence... but he was caught! Everyone is making really
good progress in riding. This week, Dove picked the riders for the horse invitational. There will be three camps competeing.
Some of the riders from Nicolet participating are Chloe Starz, Courtney McCahey, Alysen Demzik, and Sarah Jacobson. The Invitational Horse Show
will be held at Camp Red Pine. We wish all riders the best of luck!

"Spencer's Tubing Stories"
by Spencer Davis
When I went tubing for the first time, it was SO MUCH FUN! I went with my friend Bailey
and we went SUPER FAST and we didn't fall off! Then, on my second time, I went with my friend
Paige and we went really, really, really fast. Do you think we fell off? No, we didn't! On my third time
I went with Lexi and she fell off once, and I fell off THREE times! Whew! On my fourth time, I fell off twice,
but I flipped the tube over and my friend Courtney flipped over, too! "Don't forget to wear a life jacket," they always say.
The only reason we tube, instead of ski, is because it gets really wavy on the lake - and, of course, that makes it really fun!
Everyone always has a great time tubing!

"Camp Commentary"
by Courtney McCahey and Bailey Nissen
Bailey Nissen of Little Fawn comments on waterskiing 2002 at Nicolet: "I love to go waterskiing! It was
my first time and I got up on the boom, but now I get up on the rope! It is very fun. It is not hard to learn. I love
camp! It is so much fun!" Thank you, Bailey! Courtney McCahey conducted an interview with Instructor/Program Assistant Kyle
Hans. Courtney asks, "What do you like teaching at camp?" Kyle replies, "I like canoeing and sailing." Courtney asks, "What is your
favorite thing about teaching?" Kyle says, "My favorite thing is teaching kids things which they have never done before." Courtney inquires,
"What do you do here at camp?" Kyle replies, "I am a smallcraft and sports instructor, and I specialize in rowing and canoeing." This concludes
this weeks edition of "Camp Commentary." Thanks for reading!
