This edition of News from Franklin Lake features some wonderful articles by talented campers who participated in the Newsletter Elective. The Advanced Camper Whitewater Rafters!

A Day at Nicolet
by Jennifer Loewenstein

Every morning we wake up at 7:30. We get dressed and go to breakfast at 8:00. At every meal, you say grace. Some are "Johnny Appleseed," "Back of the Bread," and "Morning is Here." After breakfast all the campers hurry back to their cabin for capers. All the cabins compete for first place in cabin capers. Capers includes cleaning and organizing your cabins. If you win first session, you get ice cream at Dairy Queen. If you win second session, you get ice cream at Dairy Queen and get to see a ski show. The bell rings three times to signal first activity - although each cabin has a different schedule. They go to all six activities. They are: skiing, smallcraft, tennis, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and swimming. At 11:00 am second hour begins. Following second hour is lunch at 12:30 pm. After lunch is an hour and fifteen minutes of rest hour. You can write letters, rest, listen to music, etc. At 2:45 pm, the third activity of the day begins. Then at 4:15 pm, it is optional hour. You can pick the activity in which you wish to participate. Right before dinner we lower the flag, and then we go to dinner. After dinner, there is some kind of activity. They are electives, unit night, cabin night, cookouts, and campfires. At 9:30, the cabin lights have to be turned off. This is called Taps. This is a typical Monday through Saturday schedule with the exception of Sunday, where we do an all-camp activity. No matter what day it is, it's always full of sunshine and good times at Camp Nicolet.
Camp Nicolet from an
International Counselor's Perspective

by Emma Audin

Being at camp is a fantastic opportunity to meet great new people. All the campers are really fun, and it is very rewarding to see them improving their skills - from horse riding to skiing, and cleaning to singing. It is amazing to see now all the kids have come on, from the first day arriving and not knowing anyone, being very quiet and shy, to now - only a few days later - having bonded together with their cabinmates and counselors alike. All the counselors are great with the kids, and have a natural talent to bring out the best in the campers. I have learned a great deal in a short space of time from other staff, which I am sure will stay with me for a very long time.

Eatin' Good
an interview

by Lizzy Copulsky
Claire Weissenberger
and Melodie Rusch

Our cook, John Schultz, was kind enough to listen to us interview him! The following are the culinary questions we asked:

How has your summer been so far cooking at Nicolet?
John says, "great, because I love kids and because I love cooking at summer camps.

Do you think you will be making any "hot plates?"
John says, "negative!" (Note: "hot plates" are when they throw leftovers from the past week into a pan an serve it... gross!)

Head Cook John Schultz

What is your favorite food to make at camp?
John says, "baked chicken - because it smells really, really good!"

Do you put your heart and soul into your cooking?
John says, "yeah, it started a while ago when I was a dishwasher in North Carolina. And then in a month, I was moved up to assistant manager of the kitchen... and that was eight years ago!"

Thank you for your time!

Editor's Note: Everyone at Camp Nicolet extends a huge heartfelt "thank you" to our entire foodservice crew! They have done and continue to do a wonderful job in perhaps the most important area in camp! Thank you!
