July 28, 2003
 Great activites, great friends, great weather... what more could
you ask for? In this edition of "News from Franklin Lake" we have
lots to show you and lots to tell you about from this past week
at Camp Nicolet. Although this past week was full of Camping/Tripping
adventures with the Sea Kayakers at the Apostle Islands in Lake
Superior and two cabins at the Sylvania Wilderness on 3-day
canoe trips, there were still lots of fun and exciting things happening
at camp, including a special drumming elective, "tubing mania" in the ski
area, and more. And with everyone returning to camp by lunchtime this past
Friday, some exciting weekend events like Second Session Talent Show, "Nicolet
Survivor," Week 5 Campfire, and more have taken place. The fun and excitement
doesn't stop, either, with many opportunies for campers to get involved
in some inter-camp competitions happening this week. On Tuesday, campers
in the Competitive Tennis elective will participate in the Camp Menominee
Tennis Tournament, on Tuesday evening the annual soccer match with Camp
Interlaken will take place, followed by the Nicolet Invitational Gymkhana
on Wednesday. New SCUBA Divers will have the opportunity to "Discover SCUBA"
on Thursday, and the CITs will be participating in their annual "Leadership
Day" on Tuesday as well.
Also, one final activity note is that cabin Pines
will be participating in the annual Porcupine Mountains Backpacking trip
Monday through Friday this week. Half of the cabin will participate in Porkies
I which departs Monday and returns Wednesday, and half will participate
in Porkies II which leaves Wednesday and returns on Friday. This exciting
3-day, 2-night trip gives West End campers the opportunity to learn some
important Camping/Tripping skills as they progress to the bigger trips such
as Sea Kayaking and Isle Royale in later years. Campers and staff are excited
for the Porkies excursions this year. If, however, you are planning to visit
your daughter at camp during this busy week, it may be a good idea to contact
the camp office ahead of time to make sure she will be in camp - instead
of at a competition or on a trip - the day you wish to visit her. Call anytime
at (715) 545-2522. Well, enough reading for the time being... how about
some pictures?!? Here we go... thanks for dropping by this week, and Think
Sunshine!

Which one of the four teams will win? Who will be the "ultimate survivor?"
Based on the reality-TV show "Survivor," this new weekend activity was a
big hit with campers and staff alike. Nicolet's "Survivor" included team
activites, like land sports, water relays, a food relay (no, not REAL worms,
but participants did get their fill of gummi worms... and I don't think
anyone minded that too much...), a shelter building competition, and a totem
pole contest. To round out the competition, each of the four teams also
had to devise a creative banner and a team chant. The final competition
of the day was the "Balance Challenge" which would be used to determine
the "ultimate survivor." But in true Nicolet spirit, and unlike the television
show, no one during our "Survivor" day was voted "off the island." Emphasis
was placed on working together as a team... to, of course, try to outwit,
outplay, and outlast the other teams! Check out the pictures... it was loads
of fun for all!

"Bang the Drum!"
by Jeremy Starz
Camp Nicolet felt privledged to have long-time Family Campers Ann
and Will Schmidt join us for a special Drumming elective this past
Tuesday evening. Avid musicians, Ann and Will have been teaching students
on these unique instruments for many years. The drums campers used
were the traditional "bongo-type" drums... synthetic "animal skin"
heads stretched over shaped cylinders. Campers were introduced to
rhythms on these first, then were given the opportunity to vary their
instruments and play items such as frame drums, cow bells, shakers,
sticks, and other unique percussion instruments from across the globe.
By the end of the evening, the group of about 15 or so played an entire
complex "song" from start to finish! It was awesome! All of us here
at Nicolet would like to extend a huge "Thank You" to Ann and Will
for coming to camp and sharing their wonderful talents with us! |

Second Session
Talent Show!
by Jeremy Starz
Talent shows have been a long-standing tradition here at Camp Nicolet!
These shows are such a great opportunity for all campers to, well,
"show off" some of their great - yep - "talents!" These are exciting
evening events and are a constant reminder of just how talented Nicolet
campers are! The Second Session Talent Show was held on the evening
of Sunday, July 27th, and boasted a huge number of talented campers
in lots and lots of great acts! From singing, to silent movies, to
impersonations, to a mime act, piano playing, and so much more, the
talent show - hosted by Allison Schmidt and Rachel Stern - just couldn't
be beat! Here are some great pictures from this exciting evening!

Editor's Corner
Jeremy Starz
Thanks for dropping by this week's edition of "News from Franklin
Lake." I have had the opportunity to meet many camp parents in the
last week or so, and have gotten some nice feedback regarding the
newsletters this year. Thank you for that feedback, and if you do
have any comments which you would like to share, please let us know
anytime. I do truly appreciate parents coming up to me with compliments
and suggestions. Thank you! This week, I hope you enjoyed the plethora
of pictures we have to share with you from around camp. Time is
really starting to fly, and it's hard to believe the last week of
camp is not that far away. In working with campers this summer in
Camping/Tripping settings, and in instructional settings, I have
had the opportunity to share many memories from the days when I
was a camper at a northwoods boy's camp. I have memories from those
days as clear as these pictures adjacent to the editorial this week.
It's awesome how a moment in time - from an experience so positive
- can be so clearly frozen in your mind for years to come. In sharing
these past experiences with campers now, it's so neat to recall
some of these "snapshots" from days gone by. And perhaps the exciting
events of this past week - and from moments all through summer 2003
- are the start to a new collection of "snapshots" from now... memories
of great times and great friends... memories which will last a lifetime!
We are looking forward to an exciting week ahead, and we'll keep
you posted on what's happening, right here in the next edition of
"News from Franklin Lake!"

"Northwoods and Nicolet"
by Virginia "Ginger" O'Brien, Nicolet Staff 1954-1959
The Northwoods and Nicolet, their call is so strong;
I just long to be there, to hear a camp song.
To listen for Loons, their distinct mournful cry;
To watch the sun fade from a multi-hued sky.
To canoe on Lake Franklin, and a skinny-dip at night;
To hear campers laugh or scream with delight.
To sleep listening to waves gently lapping the shore;
To wake to new sounds - Wait!, I've heard them before.
To walk the same paths I trod long ago;
To feel my excitement but not let it show.
To meet here with friends, to laugh and to play;
That's part of the lure of Camp Nicolet.

See other issues of the newsletter.
