What A Camper Learns

Transportation & Luggage

The following information and guidelines include procedures and regulations to ensure your daughter has an enjoyable and safe journey to and from Camp Nicolet. We appreciate your cooperation and assistance in making the trip go smoothly. Thanks!

Camper Travel

Camper travel to and from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas is via chartered bus and is coordinated by the camp. For families outside these areas, car and airline transportation is utilized. We are not able to accommodate campers prior to the opening date or past the final day of camp.

Policies Regarding Transportation

FOR CAMPERS FLYING:

The closest airport is the Rhinelander Oneida County Airport outside of Rhinelander, 45 minutes from camp. The Central Wisconsin Airport in Wausau/Mosinee is a little over 2 hours away. Car rentals are available at both. It would be advisable to make reservations as soon as you can, as lots of people are traveling to the North Country this time of year.

You can assist us in making the trip go smoothly by:

  • Please have your daughter wear her camp uniform shirt for easy identification at the airport. Make sure it is visible and not covered by other clothing.

  • Please have your daughter travel as an Unaccompanied Minor! The airlines will require that you complete a form and pay a small fee for this service, but it is well worth knowing your daughter will receive special care from the airlines and will be released only to our camp chaperones once their identity is verified. It will be very important that you do this as we will only have camp representatives to meet arriving campers in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. We will also make these arrangements for her return flight.

  • Please make your daughter's reservation as an E-TICKET, not a paper ticket that could get lost. All itineraries and passports must be given to the camp chaperone immediately upon arrival.

  • Please limit your baggage to a maximum of 2 checked bags and 1 carry-on. Make sure that all bags have identification tags. Check all baggage directly to Rhinelander, Wisconsin or Central Wisconsin (depending upon destination).

  • FOR CAMPERS DRIVING TO CAMP:

Directions will be sent to all camp families in our Spring mailing.

  • Please plan your arrival time for approximately 2:00 PM on the first day. Check in at the camp office to receive her cabin assignment, etc.

  • If you plan to pick up your daughter at camp, please do so by 10:00 AM on her last day. Please check in at the camp office upon your arrival at camp.

  • CAMPERS TAKING THE CAMP BUS:

The camp bus is an optional means of transportation, but we must know if your daughter is planning to ride on the bus!

  • Please indicate this either on your Infosnap online registration and/or Camper Questionnaire.

  • All bus reservations must be prepaid.

  • You must check-in with the camp chaperones in charge before boarding the bus. This is the only way we can make sure that everyone has arrived at the point of departure.

  • Please be on time as we will depart at the time indicated.
  • Bus Pick-Up and Drop-Off Information

will be sent to all camp families in our Spring mailing.

    Bus Boarding and Traveling Procedures

    1. All campers please wear your Camp Nicolet yellow polo shirt for easy group identification.

    2. Check in with camp chaperone, receive nametag, and get bus assignment.

    3. After a camper has boarded her assigned bus, she must take a seat and remain on the bus.

    4. The camp chaperones will take a role call of all campers who have reserved seats.

    5. Orderly conduct is expected - campers must stay seated and have good behavior at all times.

    6. The lunch order will be taken on the bus. Once the lunch stop is reached, campers will remain as a group, listen to the chaperones' directions, eat lunch at the restaurant, and then re-board the buses. The lunch stop will be at McDonald's Restaurant. A variety of choices will be offered.

    7. Prior to arrival at camp, all plane tickets and passports will be collected by the camp chaperones (for campers who flew into Chicago or Milwaukee). Before departing the bus, all candy, gum, and food items will also be collected - so chew while you travel! All campers be sure to have your carry-on bags and items.

    8. Upon your arrival at camp, your counselors will greet you with large cabin signs telling you your cabin name and those of your cabin mates. Find your name and stay with your counselors. As a cabin group, you will then collect any luggage and go to your cabin - your new summer home!

    Returning Home on the Bus

The procedure for going home will be similar to arrival. You will have an assigned bus and role call will be taken. Campers will have a picnic bag lunch, pop, and water on the bus, so there will be no lunch stop on the return trip.

Important! It is essential that all parents check in with the camp chaperones and identify themselves before departing with your daughter. If someone other than a parent will be picking up a camper, we request you inform us in writing of who that person will be. They will need to show us a photo ID prior to taking your daughter. Our chaperones will not leave the area until all campers have been properly claimed. Thanks for your cooperation!

    Important Notes about the Bus

Note: we will not hold the bus more than 15 minutes for a camper who has not arrived. Please call the camp office if you know you will not get to the bus on time. Thanks!

To reserve a bus seat: If you have not already reserved a bus seat via your camp registration form (online or hardcopy), please e-mail the camp office prior to April 1st to reserve a place on the bus for your daughter. The fee will be included in your statement which is mailed in April.

    Camper Luggage

PLEASE SHIP ALL BAGGAGE 1 WEEK BEFORE YOUR DAUGHTER ARRIVES AT CAMP!!!

Because of space limitations, it is impossible to ship camper baggage on the camp bus to or from camp. Bus luggage is LIMITED TO ONE CARRY-ON only.

Camp Baggage Express services the Chicago area and will be contacting families approximately June 1st to offer the option and details of shipping your daughter's baggage with them.

United Parcel Service (UPS) is the most efficient method for all other campers. If shipping via UPS, our camp shipping address is:
Camp Nicolet, 16040 Hwy. 70 East, Eagle River, WI 54521

  • Make certain that a return address is included inside each piece of luggage. Should the exterior label be lost or defaced this is the only means of identification.

  • Do not send trunks or bags with loose handle-tied address tags. Be sure to attach tags securely with strong tape.

  • Do not place adhesive-type labels on canvas or synthetic weaved duffle bags. These labels have a tendency to rip or come off of the bag completely.
