Week 5

The Legend of Shorty's Gold

Mystery and adventure was the name of the game for this week's all-camp Sunday activity. "The Legend of Shorty's Gold" was essentially a treasure hunt to search for a bar of gold that was left at Shorty Fournier's old Bass fishing camp (the present site of Camp Nicolet) by some businessmen from Chicago. As the tale unfolds back in the 1930s, Shorty Fournier, the colorful former owner of the camp property, buried the first clues, a message to whomever finds the old chest, and a short piece of 16mm film which tells the story and requests that the lost gold be found.

The Green and Buff teams each searched for the clues and riddles until compass coordinates led them to Shorty's old cabin in the woods behind camp where an ancient box held the treasure which could be claimed for root beer floats. Written and orchestrated by Jeremy and the staff weekend committee, "Legends" day was a real hit!

Campers and staff line up for Sunday morning Vespers as something peculiar is taking place down by the beach. Hmmm...what is happening?

While digging to find a broken water pipe, Jeremy uncovers an old box that was buried in the sand.

The Buff team finds clues which are hidden in old canning jars in various places around camp.

After cutting off the padlock with campers and staff as the audience, Jeremy discovers that the ancient box contains a roll of film, 6 clues, and a message from

Shorty Fournier.

The Green team displays old photos which are picture clues, as well as part of a weathered map.

Nicolet Water Ski & Wakeboard Team Rocks!

Our 2006 Nicolet Water Ski and Wakeboard Team proudly took second overall at the Camp Kawaga Invitational Tournament. Along with approximately 10 other camps, our girls competed in the trick skiing, slalom, and wakeboarding events and were coached by Gabe and Lee. Congrats!

Tennis Team Attends Invitational Tourney

A busy week for inter camp activities, our 2006 tennis team attended an invitational tournament at Camp Menominee for Boys. After winning a few matches, the rain clouds moved in and the duration of the afternoon had to be cancelled. It was fun while it lasted! Marge was the team coach who cheered them on.

Soccer Exchange a Success

An all-time first, Nicolet girls invited Camp Menominee boys to join us in a soccer round robin. Girls vs. boys, two teams from each camp, it turned out that we won one game and the boys won one game. Teams were then combined with  boys and girls on both teams and a fun final match was played to end the afternoon.

Good defensive moves by Anna.

Paula and Claire take the ball.

High five on a goal!

Madison and Kirby wait for a pass.

Morgan wins the ball.

Coach Cleo: "These guys are big!"

Girls are definitely not pushovers!

Graylin and Izzy make the pass.

Jackie gets a good kick.

All Paths Lead to Nicolet

Vespers at Nicolet is a thoughtful time each week that is usually held on Sunday morning. Based upon a theme that contains life lessons, our 2006 theme is "All Paths Lead to Nicolet". Each week designated cabin groups add an original chapter to the story of a little girl named Cara and her mystical friend, the "Topher", who helps Cara find her way and choose the path that leads through the wishing tree. Sometimes the path is very difficult and other times choices must be made but Cara's goal is to find happiness at camp. The story will conclude at the candlelight vesper service on August 7th when our CITs write the final chapter.

Power Hikers on Porkies '06

This hardy group of trekkers backpacked the Porcupine Mountain State Park in upper Michigan this past week. Near the southern shore of Lake Superior, the scenic vistas and beautiful forests are a wonderful introduction to basic backpacking and wilderness camping skills in preparation for Isle Royale and other adventures!

Balsam and Pines cabins (campers completing 7th grade) participated on the 3-day trip in two separate groups. Both groups led by Jeremy and our tripping staff hiked the rugged trails, viewed Lake of the Clouds, and enjoyed the company of camp friends while on trail

"Pirates" Night is Spectacular Success

Arrgh, Matey! Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swan, Captain Balbosa, et al, welcomed campers and staff to a fabulously fun special dining hall event. Everyone dressed up as characters in the pirate theme and viewed sword duels, pirate drama, and a real pirate ship while munching upon super BBQed ribs and cake.

Captain Balbosa debarks his ship in search of...

None other than Jack Sparrow!

A fierce fight ensues.

Pirate cake for all!

Arrrgh...we're so scary!

Ahoy! Why are they smiling????

Swan, Sparrow, and Balbosa - what a trio!

As the gallant fight ensues, Balbosa kidnaps the beautiful Elizabeth Swan and sails away into the sunset with her.

Poor Jack is left alone, waiting for her return to port. Many thanks to Jeremy and Anissa (our ship builders), and to the entire Dining Hall committee for giving us such a fun evening!

The crowd gathers as the pirate ship approaches.

Where is that scoundrel?

Balbosa searches every table.

The illusive Jack escapes Balbosa.

Peter Pan and company arrive to save the day!

A motley crew at that.

Pirates one and all.

Captain Hook and squad.
